Signs a balance assessment may help
A fall is rarely caused by one thing. Assessment looks at strength, balance, walking, footwear, aids and the home itself.
- One or more falls or near-falls in the past year
- Holding onto walls or furniture while walking
- Unsteadiness when turning, reaching or dressing
- Fear of falling that limits daily activity
- Dizziness or lightheadedness when standing
- Difficulty getting up from the floor
What a home visit may include
- Objective balance and gait measures
- Lower-limb strength testing
- Room-by-room hazard and lighting review
- Footwear and walking-aid check
- Individualized balance and strength program
- Get-up-from-the-floor and emergency planning
